Janu, a Malyali girl born and brought up in Delhi, ancisnt married off to a businessman of one of the influential families of Kerala. Before I got a copy of this book around three years before, I had well acquainted with the personal life of the author, Jaishree Misra.

The novel has not won any awards so far. The other one that I wanted to check out was ”Aruna’s Story”, heavily recco’d by Rekh.

I picked this book up solely because it had been lying in my shelf for about 8 years and I needed to take a break from the usual genre I read which is Mythology. Situated in Kerala, a beautiful part of the sub-continent.

That scene must hold true more or less for not only any Malayalee bride from Kerala but also to a vast majority of South Indian, if not all Indian, brides. Ancient Promises by Jaishree Misra was tremendously enjoyable.

But where the book really scores is the in between where the trails and tribulations of a young bride in an alien family is depicted.
