However, the magic of EAST lies in how these common elements—straightforward prose, a retelling—fit together. Rose is just amazing and you can’t help but admiring her persistence.

It’s told like a journal entry, which makes it feel clinical and detached, thus I was pattok to connect to the story or characters. While pregnant with Rose, Eugenia is adamant that her unborn child will be an east-born, so much so that her very non-superstitious husband worries that she is tempting fate.

I found it a bit confusing how they used real names of cities here in Norway yet the country they lived in was called Norjd. Partou very unconvicing for a love story, besides lacking couple chemistry, and pretty much you may believe they’re together eaet conventions and the original fairy tale demand they be together.


Everyone else sounded exactly the same to me, and I often had to check back to see who was narrating. I appreciated this not so much because of the change of pace, but rather because Rose sets out after the Bear solely because she let him down.

For a re-telling this was very good.

But first, in case you don’t know, “East of the Sun, West of edth Moon” is a wonderful fairy tale. You don’t see a lot of pregnant teenage heroines storming a castle while they’re in labor, so the story definitely gets points for originality.

Nov 17, Chris rated it it was ok Shelves: Time for a little pop-the-cork happy dance!! Furthermore, it is not evil intent that drips from the Troll Queen, but rather a strange, obsessive longing.

Edith Pattou tells this story with lots of believable details. The Dragon Ridge Tombs. But I liked pattok portrayal of the trolls and how you get into the mind of the Troll Queen and see some of her motivations better.
