There are good parts, even looking back on it now – the women are all fully-realized, powerful, and varied, even though Eddings makes regular remarks about how “women are like this and men are like that ” – those assumptions are almost always limited to tamjli issues, not larger societal roles. I have to remark on the racial angle, because it is another thing I just can’t quite fail to see these days.
While magnificent overall, it probably can’t go as a stand-alone. But more than that, there is some supernatural element behind it all, or allianced with the people, something with enough power to raise the dead I’ve read that some people have accused his books of not having any plot to them, but I find that I must disagree. The interaction between the troll priest and the main characters later in the trilogy is also interesting.

The good parts are very small portions and spread thin throughout the book. Standard Eddings – hero and his group of wise-cracking badasses-with-hearts-of-gold including the white-haired old wizard now joining the black-haired beautiful and ageless sorceress go traipsing across every country named on the map in a quest to defeat the machinations of the power-hungry ancient god.
We arrive at Matherion, the title city, which is theoretically the heart of a Chinese-style bureaucratic empire, but other than skin tone and org structure everyone is pretty much the same and there aren’t really any culture clashes.
If I didn’t immediately begin eddinga the Tamuli after reading the Belgariad and Mallorean, Eddings’ writing maybe would not have come off as redundant. He later switched to writing epic fantasy, a field in which he achieved great success. Compared with what I’ve read in the recent past, this is a great piece of fantasy.

Eddings, as always, puts together a entertaining cast of characters. The problems of racial prejudice are attacked head-on, not subtly but honestly.

I remeber getting tired of the heros always knowing what was going to happen and planning for it well in advance It took them half the book just to find Sephrinia and she didn’t have a huge role in the second half.
The final book had an air of inevitability which took the edge off all the plot twists.

I read this series every year or two, so it feels like an old friend by eddnigs. I would possibly say that this is perhaps not as good a first book as the Diamond Throne, but it is still gripping nonetheless.

I could criticize stuff about it, but at the end of the day, I’m always happy when I start it and sad edddings it’s over. David Eddings’ wife, Leigh Eddings, was an uncredited co-author on many of his early books, but he had later acknowledged that she contributed to them all.
